PHOTOVOICE
IS
when people take pictures to share parts of their life and community to raise awareness, tell a story, or educate others with authenticity through photography.
Photovoice was developed by Caroline C. Wang and Mary Ann Burris in 1992.
In 2020 and 2021, the N.C. Justice Center partnered with community-based organizations to lead photovoice projects around the state. These participants included community members of all ages and status including those who are discriminated against due to language, gender, race, class, disability, etc. Through their art, they bring new insights and perspectives which raise awareness of hidden or overlooked issues and aspects of the community.
